Clay Olympics!

Today I traveled to Phoenix Arizona to have some fun with other potters and compete in some throwing competitions.  The first competition was with all women potters throwing the biggest thing you can with 10 lbs of clay in 10 minutes.  This was my first time trying to thrown with that much clay, so it was great to find out that I can go that big if I want to.  The next round I competed in another 10 lb clay throwing competition with a twist.  Since the whole event was pirate themed for Halloween, in this round I had a plastic hook on one hand I had to use.  It turns out, a plastic pirate hook is not a bad tool to use once you figure out how t

Too hot to pot!

Summers in Arizona are obviously excessively hot!  We're all famous for saying, "but it's a dry heat," however that doesn't help when the temperatures are regularly over 100 degrees.  My pottery studio is set up in my garage where it's lovely in the winter and I rarely have to turn on my little space heater to keep me warm.  Fast forward to this time of year where I have no air conditioning in there, and it's like opening the kiln before it's fully cooled off in there all the time.  I bought a thermometer and posted it on the wall so I could see just how hot it is in my studio.  Today it's almost 100 degrees with 40% humidity.  I'll be thinki
